Pool Energy Efficiency: Why the Plumbing Matters as Much as the Pump
Buying an efficient pump is the easy half
Pool efficiency conversations almost always start and end with equipment. Which pump, which heater, whether to add LED.
Equipment matters. It is also the half of the equation that can be replaced later, which makes it the less important half.
What determines your running costs over twenty years is how the pool is plumbed and equipped as a system. Efficient equipment attached to poor hydraulics does not deliver what it should, and the plumbing is buried under your decking.
So the useful framing is: which efficiency decisions are permanent, and which can I revisit?
The permanent decisions
Made during construction, buried afterward.
Line sizing and routing. How hard the system has to work to move water is set by the plumbing it moves through. Undersized or unnecessarily convoluted runs mean a pump working harder for the same result, every hour, for the life of the pool.
Where the equipment pad sits. Distance and elevation relative to the pool affect the work required.
Circulation design. How evenly water is turned over affects chemistry, which affects how much chemical you use and how hard the system runs.
How the pool is zoned. Whether features, spa and pool can run independently rather than everything running whenever anything runs.
None of this is visible in a rendering, and none of it is on a spec sheet. It is a reason to ask a builder how they think about hydraulics rather than which brands they carry. Where plumbing gets decided.
The revisable decisions
Pumps. Variable speed pumps are the single most discussed efficiency item, and for good reason. U.S. Department of Energy and ENERGY STAR guidance covers pool pump efficiency specifically, and variable speed models allow running at lower speeds for longer rather than at full speed for shorter periods, which is more efficient for the same turnover.
Lighting. LED versus older lighting technology, and LED also opens up color and control options.
Heating. Heater type and how it is controlled. Heating is typically the largest single energy load on a pool that has it.
Automation. Its efficiency contribution is underrated. A system that runs on a considered schedule rather than by habit, and that can be adjusted from a phone, tends to run less. Automation also makes zoning usable in practice rather than in theory.
Covers. A cover reduces evaporation and heat loss. Worth knowing at design stage though, because automatic covers generally need a regular pool shape to track along, which makes it a design decision as much as an equipment one. More on shape.
Evaporation is an energy cost too
Easy to overlook. Water that evaporates has to be replaced, and if the pool is heated, replacing warm water with cold water costs energy as well as water.
North Texas summers evaporate a meaningful amount, which makes covers more valuable here than in a milder climate, and makes wind exposure worth thinking about in design. Water features increase surface movement and exposure, which is a legitimate trade off rather than a reason to avoid them.

Chemistry and efficiency are connected
A point that rarely gets made.
Balanced water is easier to keep balanced. Water that is out of balance consumes more chemical, can require more running time to correct, and over time damages surfaces and equipment, which brings replacement forward.

What we are not going to tell you
We are not going to publish a monthly running cost or a percentage saving.
Both would be invented. Actual cost depends on pool size and volume, which equipment you have, how much you heat, how you run the system, and your utility rates. Any single figure would be misleading, and a percentage saving quoted without those variables is marketing rather than information.
What we will say plainly: the difference between a well plumbed, well equipped pool and a poorly plumbed one is real, permanent, and paid monthly for two decades. It is one of the least visible and most consequential differences between two quotes that look similar.
Questions worth asking a builder
- How do you approach line sizing and hydraulics?
- Can the spa, features and pool run independently of each other?
- What pump are you specifying, and why that one for this pool?
- How is the system controlled, and can I adjust it remotely?
- If I want a cover later, does this design allow one?
- Where is the equipment pad, and how does that affect the work the pump does?
The first question is the one that separates builders. Anyone can name a pump. More questions worth asking.
If you already own a pool
The plumbing is what it is, but the equipment is fair game.
If your equipment is aging, the sensible time to upgrade is when you are doing other work anyway, because access is already open and crews are already there. Doing it as a standalone job later costs more.
